February 1: Imbolc (Imbolg, Saint Brigid's Day [Irish: La Fheile Bride; Scottish Gaelic: La Fheill Brighde; Manx: Laa'l Breeshey]): -- The Gaelic traditional festival that marks the beginning of spring, and for Christians a the feast day of Saint Brigid, Ireland's matron saint, is observed, about halfway between the winter solstice and the spring equinox. Historically, its traditions were widely observed throughout Ireland, Scotland and the Isle of Man. Imbolc is one of the four Gaelic seasonal festivals, along with: Bealtaine, Lughnasadh and Samhain. Imbolc is mentioned in early Irish literature, and some evidence suggests it was also an important date in ancient times. It is believed that Imbolc was originally a pagan festival associated with the lambing season and the goddess Brigid. Historians suggest that the saint and her feast day are Christianizations of these. The customs of St Brigid's Day did not begin to be recorded in detail until the early modern era. In recent centuries, its traditions have included weaving Brigid's crosses, which are hung over doors and windows for protection against fire, illness and evil spirits. People also made a doll of Brigid (a Brideog), which was paraded from house-to-house by girls, sometimes accompanied by 'strawboys'. Brigid was said to visit one's home on St Brigid's Eve. To receive her blessings, people would make a bed for Brigid, leave her food and drink, and set items of clothing outside for her to bless. Holy wells would be visited, a special meal would be had, and it was traditionally a time for weather divination. Although many of its traditions died out in the 20th century, it is still observed by some Christians as a religious holiday and by some non-Christians as a cultural one, and its customs have been revived in some places. Since the latter 20th century, Celtic neopagans and Wiccans have observed Imbolc as a religious holiday. From 2023, "Imbolc/St Brigid's Day" will be a yearly public holiday in the Republic Of Ireland. February 1: National Serpent Day: -- A national day of observance that gives snakes and serpents alike their slithering due. Across religions and cultures, the serpent has been used as a symbol of evil, angels (both celestial and fallen), medicine, fertility, and much more. Over 3,000 species of snakes populate the Earth. The world's smallest snake is the Barbados thread snake. This serpent is smaller than a nightcrawler at about 4 inches. In comparison, the longest snake is the reticulated python and the heaviest is the green anaconda. Only 1/8 of the known species are venomous. While many snakes may be small, their upper and lower jaws separate. This ability allows snakes to consume prey up to three times larger than the diameter of their head. Snakes eat their prey whole. Most snakes are nocturnal. As creepy as their flicking tongue seems, they use it to smell the air. Snakes are cold-blooded, or ectotherms, and must sun themselves to regulate their body temperatures. While most snakes lay eggs, some give live birth. From anti-tumor treatments to antibacterial properties, snake venom has been studied for medical purposes for many years. To celebrate National Serpent Day, visit a zoo or herpetarium to view snakes from a variety of locations; read about serpents, their habitats, and their life cycle; watch a documentary or movie featuring snakes; create a blog post or podcast about snakes; share your experiences with snakes; study the snakes in your area; visit the National Day Calendar Classroom pages for activities surrounding National Serpent Day; and use #NationalSerpentDay to post on social media! February 1: Black History Day (National Freedom Day): -- February 1, 1865: President Abraham Lincoln signs and thereby enacts the Thirteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution abolishing slavery and involuntary servitude, except as punishment for a crime. It was the first of the three Reconstruction Amendments adopted following the American Civil War. In Congress, it was passed by the Senate on April 8, 1864, and by the House on January 31, 1865. The amendment was ratified by the required number of states on December 6, 1865. On December 18, 1865, Secretary Of State William H. Seward proclaimed its adoption. National Freedom Day, the celebration of the enactment of the Thirteenth Amendment, was founded by Richard R. Wright, a former slave, U.S. Army Major, educator, college president, politician, civil rights advocate and banking entrepreneur. In 1941, Richard Robert Wright, Sr. invited national and local leaders to meet in Philadelphia to formulate plans to set aside February 1 each year to memorialize the February 1, 1865 signing of the 13th Amendment. At that meeting, they accordingly formed the National Freedom Day Association. One year after Wright's death in 1947, both houses of the U.S. Congress passed a bill to make February 1 National Freedom Day. The holiday proclamation was signed into law on June 30, 1948, by President Harry Truman as the first official annual National Freedom Day. It was the forerunner to Black History Day and later Black History Month, officially recognized in 1976, though began by Carter G. Woodson in 1926. To observe National Freedom Day, reflect on the freedoms found in the United States; attend a National Freedom Day ceremony; read about or watch a documentary about the 13th Amendment; visit an art gallery or museum displaying pieces inspired by the 13th Amendment; attend a forum or lecture to discuss the 13th Amendment and its impact, then and now; read the 13th Amendment in its entirety; teach someone about the 13th Amendment; write about or discuss the 13th Amendment in a social media post, broadcast, or article; use #NationalFreedomDay and/or #BlackHistoryDay to post on social media. February 1: Black History Month (African American History Month, African American Heritage Month): -- The first day of Black History Month is observed, an annual observance originating in the United States. It has received official recognition from governments in the United States and Canada, and more recently has been observed in Ireland, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom. It began as a way of remembering important people and events in the history of the African diaspora. It is celebrated in February in the United States and Canada, while in Ireland, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom it is observed in October. African American History Month is a vibrant celebration that highlights the rich cultural aspects of African Americans. This month-long observance recognizes the impact of African American culture on various aspects of American life, including art, music, literature, and cuisine. It's a time for everyone to learn and appreciate the diverse and profound influence that African Americans have had on shaping the nation's history and identity! This celebration honors the achievements and contributions of African Americans throughout history. It's a moment to reflect on the struggles and triumphs of past generations, acknowledging their perseverance and impact on society. This month emphasizes the importance of understanding African American history as an integral part of American history. Through this recognition, we honor those who have fought for equality and justice, inspiring future generations to continue the journey toward a more inclusive and equitable society. Black History Month is not just about looking back; it's about fostering a more inclusive future. The celebration encourages a deeper appreciation of cultural diversity and promotes understanding and respect among different communities. It's a reminder of the ongoing efforts to achieve equality and the importance of continuing to support and uplift African American voices and stories in all areas of life. Black History Month started as a week-long celebration known as "Negro History Week" in 1926. Carter G. Woodson, a prominent African American historian, launched this initiative to emphasize the significant contributions of African Americans to U.S. history, which were often overlooked. A week in February was chosen to honor the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass, both influential figures in the fight against slavery. In 1976, during the United States bicentennial, the celebration expanded to a month. This change allowed more time for educational activities and events to highlight African American achievements and culture. Since then, every president has endorsed February as Black History Month. This month-long observance encourages schools, communities, and institutions to organize events and share knowledge about African American history. Black History Month recognizes and honors the rich cultural heritage and contributions of African Americans. It provides an opportunity for reflection, education, and celebration of the diverse stories and accomplishments that shape American history. This month helps to ensure that the legacies of African American leaders, artists, and activists continue to inspire future generations. February 1, 1793: The Age Of Enlightenment (The Enlightenment, The Age Of Reason): The Age Of Revolution: The Atlantic Revolutions: The French Revolution: The French Revolutionary And Napoleonic Wars (The Great French War) (The French Revolutionary Wars, The Napoleonic Wars): The Napoleonic Wars: The Coalition Wars: The War Of The First Coalition: -- France declares war on the United Kingdom and the Netherlands, bringing them into the War Of The First Coalition. The War of the First Coalition is the traditional name of the wars that several European powers fought between 1792 and 1797 against initially the Kingdom of the French and then the French Republic that succeeded it. They were only lightly allied and fought without much apparent coordination or agreement; each power had its eye on a different part of France it wanted to appropriate after a French defeat, which never occurred. As early as 1791, the other monarchies of Europe looked with outrage at the revolution and its upheavals, and considered whether they should intervene, either in support of King Louis XVI, or to prevent the spread of revolution, or to take advantage of the chaos in France. Anticipating an attack, France declared war on Prussia and Austria in the spring of 1792, and on the United Kingdom and the Netherlands on February 1, 1793. The French Revolutionary Wars were a series of sweeping military conflicts lasting from 1792 until 1802 and resulting from the French Revolution. They pitted France against Great Britain, Austria, Prussia, Russia and several other monarchies. They are divided in two periods: the War of the First Coalition (1792-97) and the War of the Second Coalition (1798-1802). Initially confined to Europe, the fighting gradually assumed a global dimension. After a decade of constant warfare and aggressive diplomacy, France had conquered a wide array of territories, from the Italian Peninsula and the Low Countries in Europe to the Louisiana Territory in North America. French success in these conflicts ensured the spread of revolutionary principles over much of Europe, but at a terrible cost in lives, property and treasure to all involved. A pioneer of stride piano, he was one of the most important pianists in the early era of recording, and like Jelly Roll Morton, one of the key figures in the evolution of ragtime into what was eventually called jazz. Johnson composed many hit songs, including "Carolina Shout" and the unofficial anthem of the Roaring Twenties, "The Charleston", and he remained the acknowledged king of New York jazz pianists through most of the 1930s. February 1, 1902: #BOTD: #HBD! Langston Hughes, African American poet, social activist, novelist, playwright, and columnist (d. May 22, 1967) is #born James Mercer Langston Hughes in Joplin, Missouri. He was one of the earliest innovators of the then-new literary art form called jazz poetry. Hughes is best known as a leader of the Harlem Renaissance in New York City. He famously wrote about the period that "the negro was in vogue", which was later paraphrased as "when Harlem was in vogue". His writing experiments began when he was young. While in grammar school in Lincoln, Hughes was elected class poet. He stated that in retrospect he thought it was because of the stereotype about African Americans having rhythm: "I was a victim of a stereotype. There were only two of us Negro kids in the whole class and our English teacher was always stressing the importance of rhythm in poetry. Well, everyone knows, except us, that all Negroes have rhythm, so they elected me as class poet." Langston Hughes died in the Stuyvesant Polyclinic in New York City at the age of 66 from complications after abdominal surgery related to prostate cancer. His ashes are interred beneath a floor medallion in the middle of the foyer in the Schomburg Center For Research In Black Culture in Harlem, it being the entrance to an auditorium named for him. The design on the floor is an African cosmogram entitled Rivers. The title is taken from his poem "The Negro Speaks of Rivers". Within the center of the cosmogram is the line: "My soul has grown deep like the rivers". Today, February 1, 2026

February 1, 1937: #BOTD: #HBD! Don Everly, American singer-songwriter and guitarist (The Everly Brothers) (d. August 21, 2021) is #born Isaac Donald Everly in Brownie, Muhlenberg County, Kentucky. The Everly Brothers were an American country-influenced rock and roll duo, known for steel-string acoustic guitar playing and close harmony singing. Consisting of Isaac Donald "Don" Everly and Phillip "Phil" Jason Everly, the duo was raised in a musical family, first appearing on radio singing along with their father Ike Everly and mother Margaret Everly as "The Everly Family" in the 1940s. When the brothers were still in high school, they gained the attention of prominent Nashville musicians like Chet Atkins, who began to groom them for national attention. They began writing and recording their own music in 1956, and their first hit song came in 1957, with "Bye Bye Love", written by Felice and Boudleaux Bryant. The song hit No. 1 in the spring of 1957, and additional hits would follow through 1958, many of them written by the Bryants, including "Wake Up Little Susie", "All I Have to Do Is Dream", and "Problems". In 1960, they signed with the major label Warner Bros. Records and recorded "Cathy's Clown", written by the brothers themselves, which was their biggest selling single. The brothers enlisted in the United States Marine Corps Reserve in 1961, and their output dropped off, though additional hit singles continued through 1962, with "That's Old Fashioned (That's the Way Love Should Be)" being their last top-10 hit. Long-simmering disputes with Wesley Rose, the CEO of Acuff-Rose Music, which managed the group, a growing drug usage in the 1960s, as well as changing tastes in popular music, led to the group's decline in popularity in its native U.S., though the brothers continued to release hit singles in the U.K. and Canada, and had many highly successful tours throughout the 1960s. In the early 1970s, the brothers began releasing solo recordings, and in 1973 they officially broke up. Starting in 1983, the brothers got back together, and would continue to perform periodically until Phil's death in 2014. The group was highly influential on the music of the generation that followed it. Many of the top acts of the 1960s were heavily influenced by the close-harmony singing and acoustic guitar playing of the Everly Brothers, including the Beatles, the Beach Boys, the Bee Gees, and Simon & Garfunkel. Rolling Stone ranked the Everly Brothers No. 1 on its list of the 20 Greatest Duos of All Time. They were inducted into The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame as part of the inaugural class of 1986, and into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2001. Don was inducted into the Musicians Hall of Fame and Museum in 2019, earning the organization's first Iconic Riff Award for his distinctive rhythm guitar intro to the Everlys' massive 1957 hit "Wake Up Little Susie". Don Everly died at his home in Nashville, Tennessee, aged 84. His remains were cremated, and the ashes were scattered in The Green River, a 384-mile-long (618 km) tributary of the Ohio River that rises in Lincoln County in south central Kentucky. #DonEverly #EverlyBrothers #EverlyBros #RockAndRoll #RockNRoll #Rockabilly #CountryMusic #MP4 #VideoDownload #DVD On Sale @ 15% Off Discount Till Midnight PT! https://store.earthstation1.com/everly-brothers-rock-39n39-roll-odyssey3939.html

February 1, 1942: The European Civil War: World War II: The Second European War (The European Theater Of World War II): United States Government Propaganda Organizations: Voice Of America (VOA): -- Voice Of America, the official external radio and television service of the United States government, begins broadcasting with programs aimed at areas controlled by the Axis powers. Even before the December 1941 Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, the U.S. government's Office of the Coordinator of Information (COI) had already begun providing war news and commentary to the commercial American shortwave radio stations for use on a voluntary basis, through its Foreign Information Service (FIS) headed by playwright Robert E. Sherwood, who served as President Franklin Delano Roosevelt's speech writer and information advisor. Direct programming began a week after the United States' entry into World War II in December 1941, with the first broadcast from the San Francisco office of the FIS via General Electric's KGEI transmitting to the Philippines in English (other languages followed). During this time, Frank Shozo Baba (January 3, 1915 - January 16, 2008) became involved, a Japanese American Nisei who made radio broadcasts during World War II in the United States and in post-war Japan. He spent twelve years in Japan from the age of six months; another six years from age 29, and four and half years from age 46. He was a member of Voice of America under the Office of War Information in June 1942, as well as in 1952 and 1960. He was well known for his contributions to the Japanese broadcasting industry after World War II at NHK under the Supreme Commander of the Allied Powers (GHQ) and in initiating commercial broadcasting in Japan. The next step was to broadcast to Germany, which was called Stimmen aus Amerika ("Voices from America") and was transmitted on February 1, 1942. It was introduced by the "Battle Hymn of the Republic" and included the pledge: "Today, and every day from now on, we will be with you from America to talk about the war... The news may be good or bad for us - We will always tell you the truth." Roosevelt approved this broadcast, which then-Colonel William J. Donovan (COI) and Sherwood (FIS) had recommended to him. It was Sherwood who actually coined the term "The Voice of America" to describe the shortwave network that began its transmissions on February 1, from 270 Madison Avenue in New York City. The Office of War Information, when organized in the middle of 1942, officially took over VOA's operations. VOA reached an agreement with the British Broadcasting Corporation to share medium-wave transmitters in Great Britain, and expanded into Tunis in North Africa and Palermo and Bari, Italy, as the Allies captured these territories. The OWI also set up the American Broadcasting Station in Europe. Asian transmissions started with one transmitter in California in 1941; services were expanded by adding transmitters in Hawaii and, after recapture, the Philippines. By the end of the war, VOA had 39 transmitters and provided service in 40 languages. Programming was broadcast from production centers in New York and San Francisco, with more than 1,000 programs originating from New York. Programming consisted of music, news, commentary, and relays of U.S. domestic programming, in addition to specialized VOA programming. About half of VOA's services, including the Arabic service, were discontinued in 1945. In late 1945, VOA was transferred to the US Department of State. Also included among the cultural diplomacy programming on the Columbia Broadcasting System was the musical show Viva America (1942-49) which featured the Pan American Orchestra and the artistry of several noted musicians from both North and South America, including Alfredo Antonini, Juan Arvizu, Eva Garza, Elsa Miranda, Nestor Mesta Chaires, Miguel Sandoval, John Serry Sr., and Terig Tucci. By 1945, broadcasts of the show were carried by 114 stations on CBS's "La Cadena de las Americas" network in 20 Latin American nations. These broadcasts proved to be highly successful in supporting President Roosevelt's policy of Pan-Americanism throughout South America during World War II. The IJN briefly sent two aircraft carriers to chase TF 8 and TF 17 but quickly abandoned the pursuit and continued their support for the ongoing successful conquests of the Philippines and Netherlands East Indies. The raids, however, did help lift the morale of the U.S. Navy and the American public, still reeling from the Pearl Harbor attack and the loss of Wake Island. The raids also provided valuable experience in carrier air operations, which hardened the U.S. carrier groups for future combat against Japanese forces. February 1, 1942: #BOTD: #HBD! Terry Jones, Welsh actor, writer, comedian, screenwriter, film director, historian, medievalist and member of the Monty Python comedy team (d. January 21, 2020) is #born Terence Graham Parry Jones in the seaside town of Colwyn Bay, on the north coast of Wales, the son of Dilys Louisa (Newnes), a homemaker, and Alick George Parry-Jones, a bank clerk. The family home was named Bodchwil. As he recalled in The Pythons Autobiography by The Pythons, he was "born right bang slap in the middle of World War Two," while his father served with the Royal Air Force in Scotland. A week after he was born, his father was posted in India as a Flight Lieutenent. He had a brother, Nigel, two years his senior. He reunited with his father after four years, as the war ended; of their first meeting at Colwyn Bay train station he recollected: "I'd only ever been kissed by the smooth lips of a lady up until that point, so his bristly moustache was quite disturbing!" When Jones was four and a half, the family moved to Claygate, Surrey, England. After graduating from Oxford University with a degree in English, Jones and writing partner Michael Palin wrote and performed for several high-profile British comedy programmes, including Do Not Adjust Your Set and The Frost Report, before creating Monty Python's Flying Circus with Cambridge graduates Graham Chapman, John Cleese, and Eric Idle and American animator-filmmaker Terry Gilliam. Jones was largely responsible for the programme's innovative, surreal structure, in which sketches flowed from one to the next without the use of punch lines. He made his directorial debut with the Python film Holy Grail, which he co-directed with Gilliam, and also directed the subsequent Python films Life of Brian and The Meaning of Life. Jones co-created and co-wrote with Palin the anthology series Ripping Yarns. He also wrote an early draft of Jim Henson's film Labyrinth, though little of his work remained in the final cut. Jones was a well-respected medieval historian, having written several books and presented television documentaries about the period, as well as a prolific children's book author. In 2016, Jones received a Lifetime Achievement award at the BAFTA Cymru Awards for his outstanding contribution to television and film. After living for several years with a degenerative aphasia, he gradually lost the ability to speak and died in 2020 from complications of frontotemporal dementia, 11 days short of his 78th birthday, at his home in Highgate, North London. His family and close friends remembered him with a humanist funeral ceremony. February 1, 1943: The European Civil War: World War II: The Second European War (The European Theater Of World War II): World War II: The Pacific War (The Asia-Pacific War): The History Of Asian Americans: The History Of Japanese Americans: The Internment Of Japanese Americans: United States Armed Forces: The 442nd Infantry Regiment: -- The 442nd Infantry Regiment, one of the most decorated units for its size in U.S. military history, is created as the 442nd Regimental Combat Team (Japanese: Dai Yonhyakuyonjuni Rentai Sentodan). The 442nd Infantry Regiment was an infantry regiment of the United States Army. The regiment is best known as the most decorated in U.S. military history and as a fighting unit composed almost entirely of second-generation American soldiers of Japanese ancestry (Nisei) who fought in World War II. Beginning in 1944, the regiment fought primarily in the European Theatre, in particular Italy, southern France, and Germany. The 442nd Regimental Combat Team (RCT) was organized on March 23, 1943, in response to the War Department's call for volunteers to form the segregated Japanese American army combat unit. More than 12,000 Nisei (second-generation Japanese American) volunteers answered the call. Ultimately 2,686 from Hawaii and 1,500 from mainland U.S. internment camps assembled at Camp Shelby, Mississippi in April 1943 for a year of infantry training. Many of the soldiers from the continental U.S. had families in internment camps while they fought abroad. The unit's motto was "Go for Broke". The 442nd Regiment is the most decorated unit in U.S. military history. Created as the 442nd Regimental Combat Team, the unit quickly grew to its fighting complement of about 4,000 men by April 1943, and an eventual total of about 10,000 men served in the combined 100th Infantry Battalion and 442nd RCT. The combined units earned, in less than two years, more than 4,000 Purple Hearts and 4,000 Bronze Star Medals. The unit was awarded seven Presidential Unit Citations (seven between 1944 and 1946, five earned in one month). Twenty-one of its members were awarded the Medal of Honor. In 2010, Congress approved the granting of the Congressional Gold Medal to the 442nd Regimental Combat Team and associated units who served during World War II, and in 2012, all surviving members were made chevaliers of the French Legion d'Honneur for their actions contributing to the liberation of France and their heroic rescue of the Lost Battalion. Arriving in the European Theatre, the 442nd Regimental Combat Team, with its second and third infantry battalions, one artillery battalion and associated HQ and service companies, was attached to the 34th Infantry Division. On 11 June 1944, near Civitavecchia, Italy, the 100th Infantry Battalion, another all-Nisei fighting unit which had already been in combat since September 1943, was transferred from the 133rd Infantry Regiment to the 442nd Regimental Combat Team. Because of its combat record, the 100th was allowed to keep their original designation as the 100th Infantry Battalion. The related 522nd Field Artillery Battalion liberated at least one of the satellite labor camps of Dachau concentration camp and saved survivors of a death march near Waakirchen. The 442nd RCT was inactivated in 1946 and reactivated as a reserve battalion in 1947, garrisoned at Fort Shafter, Hawaii. The 442nd lives on through the 100th Battalion/442nd Infantry Regiment, and is the only current infantry formation in the Army Reserve. More information about the current 100th Battalion/442nd Infantry Regiment and its current alignment with the active 25th Infantry Division, the reserve 9th Mission Support Command, and its combat duty in the Vietnam War and the Iraq War can be found at 100th Infantry Battalion (United States). The 100th/442nd's current members carry on the honors and traditions of the historical unit. In recognition of its storied combat record, the 100th/442nd was also one of the last units allowed to use its individual shoulder sleeve insignia. Blair, Jr., and Joseph McNeil - sat down and ordered coffee at a lunch counter in Woolworths. They were refused service, but did not leave. Instead, they waited all day. The scene was repeated over the next few days, with protests spreading to other southern states, resulting in the arrest of over 1,600 persons but which ultimately led to the Woolworth department store chain removing its policy of racial segregation in the American South. While not the first sit-in of the Civil Rights Movement, the Greensboro sit-ins were an instrumental action, and also the most well-known sit-ins of the Civil Rights Movement. They are considered a catalyst to the subsequent sit-in movement. These sit-ins led to increased national sentiment at a crucial period in US history. February 1, 1968: The Aftermath Of World War II: The Cold War: The Cold War In Asia: The Indochina Wars: The Vietnam War (The Second Indochina War, The Vietnam Conflict, The Resistance War Against America): The Tet Offensive: Phase 1 Of The Tet Offensive: -- The day after Viet Cong guerrillas and regular North Vietnames PAVN forces launched their surprise attack on South Vietnamese and American targets throughout South Vietnam, the attacks expand in scope as PAVN/VC forces follow up with attacks on Bien Hoa, Long Thanh, Binh Duong in III Corps and Kien Hoa, Dinh Tuong, Go Cong, Kien Giang, Vinh Binh, Ben Tre, and Kien Tuong in IV Corps. The Tet Offensive was one of the largest military campaigns of the Vietnam War. Officially called by the North Vietnamese and Viet Cong "The General Offensive And Uprising Of Tet Mau Than 1968", the Tet Offensive was launched by forces of the Viet Cong and North Vietnamese People's Army of Vietnam against the forces of the South Vietnamese Army of the Republic of Vietnam, the United States Armed Forces, and their allies. It was a campaign of surprise attacks against military and civilian command and control centers throughout South Vietnam. The name of the offensive comes from the Tet holiday, the Vietnamese New Year, when the first major attacks took place. The offensive was launched prematurely in the late night hours of January 30 in the I and II Corps Tactical Zones of South Vietnam. This early attack allowed South Vietnamese and US forces some time to prepare defensive measures. When the main North Vietnamese operation began the next morning, the offensive was countrywide and well coordinated; eventually more than 80,000 North Vietnamese and Viet Cong troops struck more than 100 towns and cities, including 36 of 44 provincial capitals, five of the six autonomous cities, 72 of 245 district towns, and the southern capital. The offensive was the largest military operation conducted by either side up to that point in the war. Hanoi had launched the offensive in the belief that the offensive would trigger a popular uprising leading to the collapse of the South Vietnamese government. Although the initial attacks stunned both the U.S. and South Vietnamese armies, causing them to lose control of several cities temporarily, they quickly regrouped, beat back the attacks, and inflicted heavy casualties on North Vietnamese and Vietcong forces. The popular uprising anticipated by Hanoi never eventuated. During the Battle of Hu?, intense fighting lasted for a month, resulting in the destruction of the city. During their occupation, the North Vietnamese executed thousands of people in the Massacre at Hu?. Around the U.S. combat base at Khe Sanh, fighting continued for two more months. The offensive was a military defeat for North Vietnam though General Westmoreland reported that defeating the North Vietnamese and Viet Cong would require 200,000 more American soldiers and activation of the reserves, prompting even loyal supporters of the war to see that the current war strategy required re-evaluation. The offensive had a strong effect on the U.S. government and shocked the U.S. public, which had been led to believe by its political and military leaders that the North Vietnamese were being defeated and incapable of launching such an ambitious military operation; American public support for the war soon declined and the U.S. sought negotiations to end the war. February 1, 1968: The American Civil Rights Movement: Anti-Black Racism In The United States: Racial Segregation: Civil Rights Protests: Civil Rights Protests In The United States: The Memphis Sanitation Strike ( The Memphis Sanitation Strike Of 1968): -- #DOTD: Two African American sanitation workers, Echol Cole and Robert Walker, are crushed to death in one of the city's outdated trucks, a tragedy that ultimately resulted in The Memphis Sanitation Strike Of 1968 (February 12 - April 16, 1968). Memphis had no facilities for Black workers to wash up, change clothes or get out of the rain. Cole and Walker were sheltering from the rain inside the truck's barrel when the compacting mechanism malfunctioned. The truck hadn't been repaired because the city wouldn't spend money for safety for these workers. Only as of 2018, after 50 years, did their families receive their pension benefits. Many U.S. unions held a national moment of silence this Feb. 1 to honor Cole and Walker. On the first day of the Memphis strike, the Memphis Press-Scimitar wrote: "The country has been astonished at the garbage mess in New York, but it might have known that the trouble there was catching. Memphis Public Works officials said flatly that the trouble here was triggered by the developments which brought the New York strikers pay increases." Jesse Epps, a veteran labor organizer involved in the Memphis strike, commented on the Memphis-New York connection. Epps, who was with Dr. King when he was killed on April 4, spoke to a 2008 New York City sanitation workers' meeting. The workers were celebrating being the only NYC uniformed workers' union to negotiate and win a Martin Luther King birthday holiday in their contract. Epps said: "It was you who gave [the Memphis sanitation workers] the courage to act. It was these men from New York, if I may use the colloquialism, that fired the shot and made [the U.S.] stand up and its conscience be pricked and compelled Dr. King and others like him to come into the fray." (Workers World, Jan. 8, 2011). After the murder of Dr. King, oppressed communities in 110 U.S. cities rose up in rebellion. February 1: Chronology: Calendars: The Months Of The Year: -- February begins, second month of the year in the Julian and Gregorian calendars, the latter being the most widely used calendar in the world. Its length is 28 days except during leap years when its length is 29 days. February is preceded by the first month of the year, January, and is succeeded by the third month of the year, March. February is the third and last month of meteorological winter in the Northern Hemisphere. In the Southern Hemisphere, February is the third and last month of meteorological summer, being the seasonal equivalent of August in the Northern Hemisphere. Having only 28 days in common years, February is the only month of the year that can pass without a single full moon. Using Coordinated Universal Time as the basis for determining the date and time of a full moon, this last happened in 2018 and will next happen in 2037. The same is true regarding a new moon: again using Coordinated Universal Time as the basis, this last happened in 2014 and will next happen in 2033. February is also the only month of the calendar that, at intervals alternating between one of six years and two of eleven years, has exactly four full 7-day weeks. In countries that start their week on a Monday, it occurs as part of a common year starting on Friday, in which February 1st is a Monday and the 28th is a Sunday; the most recent occurrence was 2021, and the next one will be 2027. In countries that start their week on a Sunday, it occurs in a common year starting on Thursday; the most recent occurrence was 2015 and the next occurrence will be 2026. The pattern is broken by a skipped leap year, but no leap year has been skipped since 1900 and no others will be skipped until 2100. The Roman month Februarius was named after the Latin term februum, which means "purification", via the purification ritual Februa held on February 15 (full moon) in the old lunar Roman calendar. February observances in Ancient Rome included Amburbium (precise date unknown), Sementivae (February 2), Februa (February 13-15), Lupercalia (February 13-15), Parentalia (February 13-22), Quirinalia (February 17), Feralia (February 21), Caristia (February 22), Terminalia (February 23), Regifugium (February 24), and Agonium Martiale (February 27). These days do not correspond to the modern Gregorian calendar. February corresponds partly to the month of Pluviose and partly to the month of Ventose of The French Republican Calendar. February meteor showers include the Alpha Centaurids (appearing in early February), the March Virginids (lasting from February 14 to April 25, peaking around March 20), the Delta Cancrids (appearing December 14 to February 14, peaking on January 17), the Omicron Centaurids (late January through February, peaking in mid-February), Theta Centaurids (January 23 - March 12, only visible in the southern hemisphere), Eta Virginids (February 24 and March 27, peaking around March 18), and Pi Virginids (February 13 and April 8, peaking between March 3 and March 9). February's birthstone is the amethyst, which symbolizes piety, humility, spiritual wisdom, and sincerity. Its birth flowers are the Violet (Viola), the Common Primrose (Primula Vulgaris), and the Iris. Its zodiac signs are Aquarius (until February 18) and Pisces (February 19 onward). February 1: National Dark Chocolate Day: -- An annual reminder to indulge a little in a great bittersweet favorite! Many tout dark chocolate as the healthier chocolate. However, for some, it can be an acquired taste. Also known as bittersweet chocolate, dark chocolate is different from milk chocolate. Candy makers add milk or butter to milk chocolate, giving it a creamier consistency. Dark chocolate includes no added milk or butter. Instead, the percentage of cocoa solids remaining in the chocolate determines how dark the chocolate is. The higher the ratio, the darker the chocolate. It may also have a slightly bitter taste. Chocolate comes from the seed of the tropical Theobroma cacao tree. We have been cultivating cacao for at least three millennia, and the plant grows in Mexico, Central America, and Northern South America. Our earliest known documentation of using cacao seeds dates to around 1100 BC. Fermentation helps develop the flavor of the cacao seeds. Otherwise, the seeds are too bitter to eat. Once fermented, the beans are dried, cleaned, and roasted. After roasting, the shell is removed to produce cacao nibs. Processors then ground the cocoa nips into cocoa mass, pure chocolate in rough form. Next, they usually liquefy the cocoa mass and mold it with or without other ingredients. At this point in the process, it is called chocolate liquor. The chocolate liquor may then be processed into two components: cocoa solids and cocoa butter. Besides being lower in calories and fat, dark chocolate has many other health benefits. It also serves as a decadent ingredient in many desserts and sauces. To celebrate, eat some dark chocolate. Bake with dark chocolate. Add dark chocolate to a savory dish. Share dark chocolate recipes. Host a dark chocolate tasting. Learn about the health benefits of dark chocolate. February 1: Holiday Hugs Day: -- A day on which Atlanta Blood Services thanks all of the donors who participated in blood donation campaigns during the busy holiday season, on Christmas and New Year. These donors are usually people who have kept the habit of donating their platelets on a four-month streak the year before and continue to donate routinely to the blood bank. Platelets are cells within the human blood that help the body fight infections and diseases and are one of the main operators of the immune system. Blood is one of the most important body fluids we have. It's the fluid that helps transport oxygen to all the cells in the body and allows the circulatory system to work smoothly. While the heart pumps it so it reaches all corners of the body, the lungs make sure that the cells get oxygen and leave behind carbon dioxide, which is the toxic product of the chemical exchange that distributes the oxygen to the body. The arteries are where the oxygen-full blood runs, that's why arterial blood is typically brighter, whereas the veins carry the blood full of carbon dioxide, making venous blood darker. This is usually the blood you see taken out for blood testing. Not only does the blood help transport oxygen, but it also carries cells that are important for our health. These are part of our immune system, which helps keep our bodies healthy and heals infections and scars naturally. The blood also carries many nutrients and hormones, and also helps keep our body temperature in check. It is made up of plasma, red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. The main component of blood needed by patients in need of blood treatments for blood cancer or bone marrow transplants is the platelets, which are cell fragments that react to bleeding by clumping together to form a clot, which stops the bleeding. Patients with Leukemia, for example, have a very low count of platelets, which puts them in danger of not being able to heal inflammations or infections, lowering their immunity levels even more. That's why blood donation is so important for these people. They get to replace a good amount of that count they lost through treatment. Just like figure skaters, everyone in life will fall down at some time or another. So while it might feel tempting to just stay down, National Get Up Day is here to bring inspiration and encouragement to get back up on those feet and try again. The National Get Up campaign embraces the idea of being fearless even in the face of falling down, which certainly comes as a vital part of ice skating - whether it's a person's first time on skates or professionals are learning to spin and turn! National Get Up Day is celebrated during the dark and cold months of winter, which perhaps works well as a reminder for those who struggle with some winter blues or full-on seasonal affective disorder (SAD) that it's best to just get up again whenever things are feeling down! The origins of this day can be traced back to 2016 when the US Figure Skating Association developed the campaign with the theme "We all fall. It's how we get up that matters." The next year, National Get Up Day became a part of the fabric of the figure skating world as well as making its way into the general public. And by 2018, National Get Up Day was growing in popularity and was even celebrated just before the Winter Games held in South Korea. Part of the concept for the Get Up campaign may have been inspired by the famous American figure skater and 1984 Olympic Gold medalist, Scott Hamilton. In an interview, Hamilton once mentioned that he had calculated how many times he had fallen down during skating, and the number he came up with was around 41,600 times. But the most remarkable thing is that this figure means Hamilton also got up 41,600 times. Not only that, but he's also a four time cancer survivor - which certainly must be much more difficult to get up from than simply from an ice skating fall. February 1: G.I. Joe Day: -- Celebrates the February 1, 1964 release date of the G.I. Joe toy by Hasbro. These action figures have been a boy's first choice (and some girls too -- J.C. knows, he dated such a beauty!) since their introduction in 1964. The movable toy came in different superhero models who had different characters, but with one common theme: Action. This was the best-selling toy centered on boys and a pioneer for other toys being created. The toy was created by Stanley Weston, a toymaker who felt a toy should be created for boys like Barbie was created for girls. This idea would turn out to be one of the greatest ideas in toy history, as the G.I. Joes took the world by storm, transforming the toy industry forever. G.I. stands for 'Government issue' or 'General issue', and the term G.I. Joe referred to U.S. soldiers during the Second World War. The name was adopted for Hasbro's military-themed action figures. The toy had different models initially: Action Soldier, Action Sailor, and Action Pilot, each representing the different arms of the army. A girl version, Action Nurse, was also introduced. But later on, newer versions and variations were created. In 1982, the 3.75-inch model was introduced and was a massive success in the market. The G.I. Joe action figures became a cartoon series on T.V. in 1983. A movie about the toy was also created in 2009. Hasbro merged with Marvel Comics to release a comic based on the toy collection. Several video games with different storylines on the action figure characters were created. The toy collection has become scarce, although the rarest models like Snake Eyes and Action Nurse are of high value and are sold for over 10K USD. Additionally, a 6-inch line of action figures was launched by Hasbro in 2020 called G.I. Joe Classified, which has also been very popular with fans and collectors. Today, February 1, 2026
February 1, 1861: The American Civil War (The Civil War, The War Between The States): The Secession Of The Southern States Of America: The Secession Of Texas From The United States Of America: -- In reaction to the election of Abraham Lincoln as President, Texas becomes the seventh state to secede from the United States. By 1856, the South had lost control of Congress, and was no longer able to silence calls for an end to slavery, which came mostly from the more populated, free states of the North. The Republican Party, founded in 1854, pledged to stop the spread of slavery beyond those states where it already existed. After Abraham Lincoln was elected the first Republican president in 1860, seven cotton states - South Carolina, Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana and Texas respectively - declared their secession and formed the Confederate States of America before Lincoln was inaugurated. The United States government, both outgoing and incoming, refused to recognize the Confederacy, and when the new Confederate President Jefferson Davis ordered his troops to open fire on Fort Sumter in April 1861, there was an overwhelming demand, North and South, for war. Only the state of Kentucky attempted to remain neutral, and it could only do so briefly, and chose to remain in the Union. When Lincoln called for troops to suppress what he referred to as "combinations too powerful to be suppressed by the ordinary" judicial or martial means, four more states - Virginia, Arkansas, Tennessee and North Carolina - decided to secede and join the Confederacy, which then moved its capital to Richmond, Virginia. Residents of the western counties of Virginia did not wish to secede along with the rest of the state. This section of Virginia was admitted into the Union as the state of West Virginia on June 20, 1863. Four slave states decided to stay in the Union: Delaware, Kentucky, Maryland, and Missouri. Although divided in their loyalties, a combination of political maneuvering and Union military pressure kept these states from seceding. Sherman Hemsley died at his home in El Paso, Texas at age 74 due to superior vena cava syndrome, a complication associated with lung and bronchial carcinomas. He had a malignant mass in one of his lungs for which chemotherapy and radiation had been recommended, according to the El Paso County Texas Medical Examiner's report. On August 28, 2012, an El Paso news anchor interviewed Flora Isela Enchinton, the sole beneficiary of Hemsley's will, who said that the two were friends and had been business partners for more than two decades. During this time she lived with Hemsley and his friend Kenny Johnston. Enchinton told the Associated Press that Hemsley never mentioned any relatives. "Some people come out of the woodwork - they think Sherman, they think money," Enchinton told AP. "But the fact is that I did not know Sherman when he was in the limelight. I met them when they [Hemsley and Johnston] came running from Los Angeles with not one penny, when there was nothing but struggle." A Philadelphia man named Richard Thornton claimed to be Hemsley's brother and the true heir to his estate. After contesting the will, Thornton halted progress on funeral arrangements, and as a result, Hemsley's body remained at the San Jose Funeral Home in El Paso and unburied for months. On November 9, 2012, the legal battle over Hemsley's body ended when Judge Patricia Chew ruled in favor of Enchinton. A military funeral was given Hemsley. February 1, 1966: #DOTD: #RIP: Buster Keaton, American actor, comedian, film director, producer, screenwriter, and stunt performer (b. October 4, 1895) #dies of lung cancer aged 70 in Woodland Hills, Los Angeles, California. Despite being diagnosed with cancer in January 1966, he was never told he was terminally ill. Keaton thought that he was recovering from a severe case of bronchitis. Confined to a hospital during his final days, Keaton was restless and paced the room endlessly, desiring to return home; the day before he died, Keaton was up out of bed and moving around, and even played cards with friends who came to visit. He is buried at Forest Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Hollywood Hills, California. He was born Joseph Frank Keaton into a vaudeville family in Piqua, Kansas. He is best known for his silent films, in which his trademark was physical comedy with a consistently stoic, deadpan expression, earning him the nickname "The Great Stone Face." Critic Roger Ebert wrote of Keaton's "extraordinary period from 1920 to 1929, he worked without interruption on a series of films that make him, arguably, the greatest actor-director in the history of the movies". His career declined afterward with a dispiriting loss of his artistic independence when he was hired by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and he descended into alcoholism, ruining his family life. He recovered in the 1940s, remarried, and revived his career to a degree as an honored comic performer for the rest of his life, earning an Academy Honorary Award in 1959. Many of Keaton's films from the 1920s, such as Sherlock Jr. (1924), The General (1926), and The Cameraman (1928), remain highly regarded, with the second of these three widely viewed as his masterpiece. Among its strongest admirers was Orson Welles, who stated that The General was cinema's highest achievement in comedy, and perhaps the greatest film ever made. Keaton was recognized as the seventh-greatest film director by Entertainment Weekly, and in 1999, the American Film Institute ranked him the 21st greatest male star of classic Hollywood cinema. Friedrich Paulus was born Friedrich Wilhelm Ernst Paulus in Guxhagen, Kingdom of Prussia, German Empire. Paulus fought in World War I and saw action in France and the Balkans. He was considered a promising officer; by the time World War II broke out he had been promoted to major general. Paulus took part in the Poland and Low Countries campaigns, after which he was named deputy chief of the German Army General Staff. In that capacity, Paulus helped plan the invasion of the Soviet Union. In 1942, Paulus was given command of the 6th Army despite his lack of field experience. He led the drive to Stalingrad but was cut off and surrounded in the subsequent Soviet counter-offensive. Adolf Hitler prohibited attempts to break out or capitulate, and German defence was gradually worn down. Paulus surrendered in Stalingrad on 31 January 1943, the same day on which he was informed of his promotion to field marshal by Hitler. Hitler expected Paulus to commit suicide, repeating to his staff that there was no precedent of a German field marshal ever being captured alive. While in Soviet captivity during the war, Paulus became a vocal critic of the Nazi regime and joined the Soviet-sponsored National Committee for a Free Germany. February 1, 1991: The Aftermath Of World War II: The Cold War: The Gulf War (The Persian Gulf War, Gulf War I): Operation Desert Storm: The Battle Of Khafji: -- Coalition forces drive Iraqi forces out of Saudi Arabia when they capture the city of Khafji at the cost of 43 Coalition servicemen dead and 52 wounded, with Iraqi Army fatalities between 60 and 300, while an estimated 400 were captured as prisoners of war. Although the invasion of Khafji was initially a propaganda victory for the Ba'athist Iraqi regime, its swiftly recapture by Saudi Arabian ground forces demonstrated the ability of Coalition air power to support ground forces. The Battle of Khafji took place in and around the Saudi Arabian city of Khafji, from January 29 to February 1, 1991 and marked the culmination of the Coalition's air campaign over Kuwait and Iraq, which had begun on January 17, 1991. Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein, who had already tried and failed to draw Coalition troops into costly ground engagements by shelling Saudi Arabian positions and oil storage tanks and firing Scud surface-to-surface missiles at Israel, ordered the invasion of Saudi Arabia from southern Kuwait. The 1st and 5th Mechanized Divisions and 3rd Armored Division were ordered to conduct a multi-pronged invasion toward Khafji, engaging Saudi Arabian, Kuwaiti, and U.S. forces along the coastline, with a supporting Iraqi commando force ordered to infiltrate further south by sea and harass the Coalition's rear. These three divisions, which had been heavily damaged by Coalition aircraft in the preceding days, attacked on 29 January. Most of their attacks were repulsed by U.S. Marines as well as U.S. Army Rangers and Coalition aircraft, but one of the Iraqi columns occupied Khafji on the night of 29-30 January. Between 30 January and 1 February, two Saudi Arabian National Guard battalions and two Kuwaiti tank companies attempted to retake control of the city, aided by Coalition aircraft and U.S. artillery. By 1 February, the city had been recaptured at the cost of 43 Coalition servicemen dead and 52 wounded. Iraqi Army fatalities numbered between 60 and 300, while an estimated 400 were captured as prisoners of war. Although the invasion of Khafji was initially a propaganda victory for the Ba'athist Iraqi regime, it was swiftly recaptured by Saudi Arabian ground forces. The battle demonstrated the ability of air power to support ground forces. The Gulf War (August 2, 1990 - February 28, 1991), codenamed Operation Desert Shield (August 2, 1990 - January 17, 1991) for operations leading to the buildup of troops and defense of Saudi Arabia, and Operation Desert Storm (January 17, 1991 - February 28, 1991) in its combat phase, was a war waged by coalition forces from 35 nations led by the United States against Iraq in response to Iraq's invasion and annexation of Kuwait. The war is also known under other names, such as the Persian Gulf War, First Gulf War, Gulf War I, Kuwait War, First Iraq War or Iraq War, before the term "Iraq War" became identified instead with the 2003 Iraq War. A committed leftist, he was a defendant in the Slansky Trial, the 1952 antisemitic show trial against fourteen Communist Party Of Czechoslovakia members known as the so-called Anti-Trotskyite Trials. Though London was sentenced to life in prison, he was freed in 1955. He then settled in France with his wife Lise London, a French communist he had met in Moscow. (In the United Kingdom, the translation was published in 1970 under the title On Trial). While the main defendants were senior to London, he gained prominence worldwide by writing the book. The book resonated internationally, and was adapted by Costa-Gavras as the French-Italian movie of the same name starring Yves Montand and Simone Signoret which premiered on April 29, 1970. Chris Marker made the short film On vous parle de Prague: Le deuxieme proces d'Artur London, an on-set documentary about the making of this movie. Artur London was born in Ostrava, Moravia, Austria-Hungary (now Czech Republic) into a Jewish family. London spent 1934 to 1937 in Moscow. February 1, 1931: #BOTD: Boris Yeltsin, Soviet and Russian politician and the first President of the Russian Federation, serving from 1991 to 1999 (d. April 23, 2007) is #born Boris Nikolayevich Yeltsin in the village of Butka, Talitsky District, Sverdlovsk Oblast, then in the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic. Boris Yeltsin emerged under the perestroika reforms as one of Gorbachev's most powerful political opponents. During the late 1980s, Yeltsin had been a candidate member of the Politburo, and in late 1987 tendered a letter of resignation in protest. No one had resigned from the Politburo before. This act branded Yeltsin as a rebel and led to his rise in popularity as an anti-establishment figure. On 29 May 1990 he was elected the chairman of the Russian Supreme Soviet. On 12 June 1991 he was elected by popular vote to the newly created post of President of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic (RSFSR). Upon the resignation of Mikhail Gorbachev and the Dissolution Of The Soviet Union on 25 December 1991, the RSFSR became the sovereign state of the Russian Federation, and Yeltsin remained in office as president. He was reelected in the 1996 election, in which critics widely claimed pervasive corruption; in the second round he defeated Gennady Zyuganov from the revived Communist Party by a margin of 13.7%. However, Yeltsin never recovered his early popularity after a series of economic and political crises in Russia in the 1990s. Yeltsin transformed Russia's socialist economy into a capitalist market economy, implementing economic shock therapy, market exchange rate of the ruble, nationwide privatization and lifting of price controls. Yeltsin proposed a new Russian constitution which was popularly approved at the 1993 constitutional referendum. However, due to the sudden total economic shift, a majority of the national property and wealth fell into the hands of a small number of oligarchs. Rather than creating new enterprises, Yeltsin's policies led to international monopolies hijacking the former Soviet markets, arbitraging the huge difference between old domestic prices for Russian commodities and the prices prevailing on the world market. In the foreign policy Yeltsin offered cooperative and conciliatory relations, particularly with the Group of Seven, CIS and OSCE, as well as adherence to arms control agreements, such as START II. Much of the Yeltsin era was marked by widespread corruption, and as a result of persistent low oil and commodity prices during the 1990s, Russia suffered inflation and economic collapse. Within a few years of his presidency, many of Yeltsin's initial supporters had started to criticize his leadership, and Vice President Alexander Rutskoy even denounced the reforms as "economic genocide". Ongoing confrontations with the Supreme Soviet climaxed in the 1993 Russian constitutional crisis in which Yeltsin ordered the dissolution of the Supreme Soviet parliament, which as a result attempted to remove him from office. In October 1993, troops loyal to Yeltsin stopped an armed uprising outside of the parliament building, leading to a number of deaths. On 31 December 1999, under enormous internal pressure, Yeltsin announced his resignation, leaving the presidency in the hands of his chosen successor, then-Prime Minister Vladimir Putin. Yeltsin left office widely unpopular with the Russian population. Yeltsin kept a low profile after his resignation, though he did occasionally publicly criticise his successor. Yeltsin died of congestive heart failure in Moscow, Russia, aged 76. He was buried in the Novodevichy Cemetery on April 25, 2007, following a period during which his body had lain in repose in the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour in Moscow. Yeltsin was the first Russian head of state in 113 years to be buried in a church ceremony, after Emperor Alexander III. Today, February 1, 2026
February 1, 1990: The Aftermath Of World War II: The Cold War: The Dissolution Of The Soviet Union: The Revolutions Of 1989 (The Fall Of Nations, The Autumn Of Nations, The Fall Of Communism): The Eastern Bloc (The Communist Bloc, The Socialist Bloc, The Soviet Bloc): Secret Police Agencies In The Eastern Bloc (Secret Police Agencies In The Communist Bloc): The Czechoslovak Socialist Republic (The Czechoslovak Republic, The Fourth Czechoslovak Republic, Communist Czechoslovakia): The STB (State Security [Czech: Statni Bezpecnost, Slovak: Statna Bezpecnost]): -- The STB, the secret police force in communist Czechoslovakia founded on June 30, 1945 that served as an intelligence and counter-intelligence agency, and dealt with any activity that was considered opposition to the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia and the state, is dissolved. The StB was controlled by the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia, who used the StB as an instrument of power and repression; State Security spied on and intimidated political opponents of the Party and forged false criminal evidence against them, facilitating the communists' rise to power in 1948. Even before Czechoslovakia became a communist state, the StB obtained forced confessions by means of torture, including the use of psychoactive drugs, blackmail and kidnapping. After the coup d'etat of 1948, these practices developed under the tutelage of Soviet advisers. Other common practices included telephone tapping, permanent monitoring of apartments, intercepting private mail, house searches, surveillance, and arrests and indictment for so-called "subversion of the republic". After the coup, the StB conducted Operation Border Stone to capture citizens who attempted to defect and cross the Iron Curtain. StB was the main supporter of the Red Brigades, an Italian far-left militant organization. In cooperation with the Palestine Liberation Organization, the StB conducted logistic support and training for Red Brigades in PLO training camps in North Africa and Syria. The StB's part in the fall of the regime in 1989 remains uncertain. The reported murder of a student by police during a peaceful demonstration in November 1989 was the catalyst for wider public support and further demonstrations, leading to the overthrow of the communist regime. According to StB agent Ludvik Zifcak, he was used to impersonate a fictitious dead student, Martin Smid. However, in 1992, the Czechoslovak parliamentary commission for investigation of events of November 17, 1989, has ruled out Zifcak's testimony, stating that "the role of former StB lieutenant L. Zifcak was only marginal, without any connection to critical events and without any active effort to influence these events. Investigation of related circumstances has indisputably proved that L. Zifcak's testimony that attributes a key role in November's events to himself is based on facts, which are either technically impossible and unfeasible, or contradict actions of persons mentioned by him, which aimed to completely different goals." State Security was dissolved on February 1, 1990. The current intelligence agency of the Czech Republic is the Security Information Service. Former employees and associates (informers) of the StB are currently banned from taking certain jobs, such as legislators or police officers. The Act on Lawlessness of the Communist Regime and on Resistance Against It states that the StB, as an organisation based on the ideology of the Communist Party, "aimed to suppress human rights and democracy through its activities" and thus based on a criminal ideology. The State Security was a part of the National Security Corps (Czech: Sbor narodni bezpecnosti, SNB; Slovak: Zbor narodnej bezpecnosti, ZNB) along with Public Security (Czech: Verejna bezpecnost, VB; Slovak: Verejna bezpecnost, VB) - a uniformed force that performed standard police duties. Both forces worked at regional and district levels, supervised by the Ministries of the Interior of the Czech and Slovak Socialist Republics, but operationally directed by the federal Ministry of Interior. In the early 1990s former dissident and "StB hunter" Petr Cibulka published the names of over 200,000 alleged StB officers and collaborators, who spied and reported on family members, friends, neighbours, and colleagues. Pavel Bret, a deputy director of the Office for the Documentation and the Investigation of the Crimes of Communism, criticized Cibulka's lists, saying: "It's dangerous to apply sweeping blacklisting. We shouldn't forget who compiled them. If [Cibulka] wants to be objective, he should also inform the public how people had been recruited -- that it was often through compromising documents, extortion, beatings -- or their collaboration was falsified." In 2003, the Czech Interior Ministry released an official list of 75,000 StB agents and collaborators, including 3,000 names of collaborators from abroad. According to the Radio Prague, "The Ministry says it contains less names than that of Petr Cibulka because it only lists those who collaborated with the StB knowingly, and not people who were considered as potential informants." February 1, 1878: #BOTD: #HBD!: Hattie Wyatt Caraway, American democratic politician who became the first woman elected to serve a full term as a United States Senator, the first to be re-elected, and the first woman to preside over the Senate (d. December 21, 1950) is #born Hattie Wyatt near rural Bakerville in Humphreys County in west-central Tennessee. Hattie Ophelia Wyatt Caraway;s husband Thaddeus Caraway was elected the U.S. Senator from Arkansas in 1920. Following his March 3, 1931 death, she filled the remainder of his term; following the precedent of appointing widows to temporarily take their husbands' places, Arkansas governor Harvey Parnell appointed Hattie Caraway to the vacant seat, and she was sworn into office on December 9. With the Democratic Party of Arkansas's backing, she easily won a special election in January 1932 for the remaining months of the term, becoming the first woman elected to the Senate. In May 1932, Caraway surprised Arkansas politicians by announcing that she would run for a full term in the upcoming election. Lacking any significant political backing, Caraway accepted the active support of fellow Senator Huey Long, of neighboring Louisiana. Caraway went on to win the general election in November, with the accompanying victory of Franklin D. Roosevelt as U.S. President. Caraway was reelected in 1948, and served a total of 14 years in the Senate. On her final day in the Senate, she received a rare standing ovation from her all-male colleagues. Roosevelt then appointed her to the Employees' Compensation Commission, and in 1946, President Harry S. Truman gave her a post on the Employees' Compensation Appeals Board, on which she served until suffering a stroke in January 1950. She died that same year while still in office as Sentator in Falls Church, Virginia, and was buried in Oaklawn Cemetery in Jonesboro, Arkansas. Today's EarthStation1.com #OnThisDay Commemorative Memorial Title: Frankenstein: The Modern Prometheus Documentary MP4 Video Download DVD
Today, February 1, 2026
February 1, 1851: #DOTD: #RIP: Mary Shelley, English novelist, short story writer, dramatist, essayist, biographer, travel writer and playwright, best known as the author of the Gothic horror novel The Modern Prometheus (1818), popularly known as Frankenstein, considered one of the earliest pieces of science fiction, editor and promotor of the works of her husband, the Romantic poet and philosopher Percy Bysshe Shelley (b. August 30, 1797) #dies at Chester Square, Belgravia, London, England at the age of fifty-three from what her physician suspected was a brain tumour. According to Jane Shelley, Mary Shelley had asked to be buried with her mother and father; but Percy and Jane, judging the graveyard at St Pancras to be "dreadful", chose to bury her instead at St Peter's Church, Bournemouth, near their new home at Boscombe. In order to fulfil Shelley's wishes, Percy Florence and his wife Jane had the coffins of her parents exhumed and buried with her in Bournemouth. On the first anniversary of Mary Shelley's death, the Shelleys opened her box-desk. Inside they found locks of her dead children's hair, a notebook she had shared with Percy Bysshe Shelley, and a copy of his poem Adonais with one page folded round a silk parcel containing some of his ashes and the remains of his heart. Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley was born Mary Wollstonecraft Godwin in Somers Town, London, in 1797. She was the second child of the feminist philosopher, educator, and writer Mary Wollstonecraft and the first child of the philosopher, novelist, and journalist William Godwin. Mary's mother died 11 days after giving birth to her. She was raised by her father, who provided her with a rich if informal education, encouraging her to adhere to his own anarchist political theories. When she was four, her father married a neighbour, Mary Jane Clairmont, with whom Mary came to have a troubled relationship. In 1814, Mary began a romance with one of her father's political followers, Percy Bysshe Shelley, who was already married. Together with her stepsister, Claire Clairmont, she and Percy left for France and travelled through Europe. Upon their return to England, Mary was pregnant with Percy's child. Over the next two years, she and Percy faced ostracism, constant debt and the death of their prematurely born daughter. They married in late 1816, after the suicide of Percy Shelley's first wife, Harriet. In 1816, the couple and Mary's stepsister famously spent a summer with Lord Byron and John William Polidori near Geneva, Switzerland, where Shelley conceived the idea for her novel Frankenstein. The Shelleys left Britain in 1818 for Italy, where their second and third children died before Shelley gave birth to her last and only surviving child, Percy Florence Shelley. In 1822, her husband drowned when his sailing boat sank during a storm near Viareggio. A year later, Shelley returned to England and from then on devoted herself to the upbringing of her son and a career as a professional author. The last decade of her life was dogged by illness, most likely caused by the brain tumour which killed her at the age of 53. Until the 1970s, Shelley was known mainly for her efforts to publish her husband's works and for her novel Frankenstein, which remains widely read and has inspired many theatrical and film adaptations. Recent scholarship has yielded a more comprehensive view of Shelley's achievements. Scholars have shown increasing interest in her literary output, particularly in her novels, which include the historical novels Valperga (1823) and Perkin Warbeck (1830), the apocalyptic novel The Last Man (1826) and her final two novels, Lodore (1835) and Falkner (1837). Studies of her lesser-known works, such as the travel book Rambles in Germany and Italy (1844) and the biographical articles for Dionysius Lardner's Cabinet Cyclopaedia (1829-1846), support the growing view that Shelley remained a political radical throughout her life. Shelley's works often argue that cooperation and sympathy, particularly as practised by women in the family, were the ways to reform civil society. This view was a direct challenge to the individualistic Romantic ethos promoted by Percy Shelley and the Enlightenment political theories articulated by her father, William Godwin. February 1: Spunky Old Broads Day (S.O.B. Day): -- A special holiday created by Dr. Gayle Carson in 2002 aims to dispel the myth about life automatically winding up for women once they hit the 50 mark. Need proof? Trailblazing Kamala Harris, who at 56 shattered racial barriers by becoming the 49th Vice President of the United States - the first woman, first Black American, and first person of Asian heritage. Martha Stewart, aged 50, secured her empire with the transformation of her brand. Patricia Field, "Sex and the City" costume designer, also hit success at 54. In a world that tends to tip the scale in favor of younger women, undermining talents, remarkable achievements, and legacies of badass older women whose zeal and passion have impacted us in ways words adequately fail to describe. Author/T.V. Consultant Dr. Carson boldly changes the narrative with her much-needed initiative Spunky Old Broads Day. This special holiday urges women aged 50 and over to fully embrace the beauty of aging, revel in their authentic selves by living regret-free lives to the fullest. Not just for old women, it eloquently describes all women as Spunky, Open, and Brave (S.O.B.). Big picture: we see it at our every turn; how from age 50, the rousing applause gradually starts to fade, spotlight drifting to younger talents and just like that, years of hard work and dazzling brilliance is swiftly forgotten, and with that comes an overwhelming feeling of worthlessness, doubting of capabilities, loneliness, and invisibility. While society places limits and barriers on the 50 milestones, Dr. Carson S.O.B preaches otherwise. She believes 50 isn't a life sentence that automatically closes the window on your most significant successes; instead, for women with fire and spirit, 50 could very well translate as the perfect spur to reinvent self, conquer even more territories, achieve greater accomplishments, and impact their world. Ushering in this fun month-long holiday - Spunky Old Broads Month - Spunky Old Broads Day, kick-started in 2002, pays homage to the wisdom, vitality, inner beauty, strength, and talent of incredibly vivacious queens aged 50 and beyond who have weathered the storms of life, and devoted their lives to guiding us with their knowledge and experiences.
